Blue Corn
Some Navajos grow blue corn along with the sweet corn in their gardens. In order to preserve the abundance of the harvest, blue corn is dried. Later it is ground into flour for flatbread.

We purchased a quart-sized baggie of blue corn at the flea market to show our friends in Iowa and California this interesting species.

Last week, I decided to cook beef stew and toss some of the dried blue corn in it. Though the stew slow-cooked five hours, and the corn simmered the same amount of time on the stovetop, the corn remained the texture (and flavor of) rubbery rocks.

Being a modern woman, I went straight to the source of truth, the Internet. As we all know, one can find the answer to anything on the Internet. Among the tidbits of advice were soak the kernels in lime water (not fruit but the mineral lime that comes from burning cedar logs to ash then running water through the ash filter); use baking soda; or soak them all night in plain water at room temperature.

I soaked those stubborn seeds in baking soda all night. In the morning, the seed coats starting to flake off. They reminded me of the exoskeleton of shrimp – clear and crackly. Then I painstakingly peeled those seeds one by one.

The cup of blue corn was now in two piles: kernels and chitin.  Persisting in the quest, I boiled the kernels for another hour, letting them plump up to the size and shape of hominy – pesole – and added it to the stew leftovers. And it was very good.

Good outcomes take guidance, time, and diligence.

Field Day
Pray for good outcomes this year. The latest news is that our principal has decided to help at Hilltop on a part-time basis, instead of leaving completely. This will give us credibility and stability that is needed in the community. Also, things have changed, and the school is seeking someone to teach 5th and 6th grade until December.

Love you all.

Grand Canyon - a must visit

We recently returned from a California trip. How delightful it was to see many of you again as well as visiting the beach and the desert!

We were thrilled to talk to our old and new friends about our ministry here in the Navajo Nation. So many of you encouraged us as we prepare for this coming school year. We were given books and little toys for the school children. We also brought back chess sets to donate to a Rez school that has a chess team.

One of our friends commented that it seems like a hopeless situation for our Native friends; but where there is darkness, the light makes even more of an impact. We’re looking forward to sharing those stories of light with
you too.

We got to visit the beach.

Work teams come here from all over the United
States throughout the summer. Some bolster the building projects and others work with the children in our “summer school” or community. A group from Teen Challenge received permission to visit the jail. We heard that it is unusual for them to minister to mixed groups, and there were an unusual amount of detainees there that day. Praise the Lord, it was reported that five women prayed to receive Jesus as their Savior. Pray for these women that they will be mentored and that the seeds will grow with life-changing results.

We are on the verge of a new school year, and Mr. Tiger, whose administration we valued last year, will be taking a less hands-on role this year. The Hilltop staff is almost all here, and we’re standing on our tip-toes to see what the Lord is going to do. So, pray for WIM (Western Indian Ministries’) leadership and school board as they make important decisions.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

6.11.15 Blessings

Mr. Tiger congratulates the Kindergarten class and Parents.

Dear Friends,
Thank you for blessing us with your prayers and gifts throughout the year.  We will be traveling this summer to visit friends and share our ministry to the Navajo children at Hilltop Christian School (one of the facets of Western Indian Ministries). We appreciate prayers for our trip.

As we closed out our school year, Roger and I gave each of our students a character award and an academic award at the assembly. But, even more important was the Blessing that we prepared for each child. The Blessing was done in our own classrooms, and it was amazing how seriously the children participated in this and how they listened to each other’s blessings.

See the garden grow!
Mine were fairly short, so I’d like to share a few of them with you. The names and genders have been changed, of course.

May Liam walk before You, God, as King David walked, with integrity of heart and uprightness, doing according to all that You have commanded him, and keeping Your statutes and rules. May Liam use his gifts of communication to lead Your people and his nation.

Bless Esther with good health, as she grows to be a faithful friend and helper as was Dorcas. May the Lord go ahead of her and prepare the way. May God come behind her and protect her. May the Lord surround her and make her aware of His presence. May Esther use her gifts of friendship and helpfulness to bless her sisters and her friends.

Terrell, God has uniquely equipped you for His service.  You have a wonderful ability to see God’s hand all around you and to share that with others. God has gifted you in the area of academics. May you commit to God those gifts He has given to you. Use the gifts to be a breath of fresh air and to help others who are seeking the Father. May they see in you a life blessed by faith.

May Larry be a soldier of prayer as was our Savior Jesus. May he seek the Father before, during, and after his time of struggle.  May he pray at all times, asking for everything he and his people need. May Larry use his ability to learn quickly to help his brothers.
Field trip to see a potter.

May Rhianna’s heart be encouraged as she learns more about Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. As she discovers the talents and gifts You have given her, may she grow up like Timothy, who was an example to believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.

May Ilene be willing to be giving and loving and enable others to fulfill their potential as did Leah and Rachel in the Book of Genesis. Lord, help her to be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power and put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, have her feet fitted with readiness that comes from the Gospel of peace, take up the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. May Irene use her fine reading ability to glorify God and bring pleasure to others.

May Abigail continue to love God with the fervor and child-like faith she has now. May her love for others increase and overflow on Your people and her nation. May the Lord strengthen her heart so that she will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father, when our Lord Jesus Christ comes with all His holy ones. May Abigail use the gifts you have given her to be the leader you want her to be.

Pajama Day was a favorite.
May Clayton use his strengths to be a mouthpiece for Your grace. May he be protected from the evil one—for You have not given Your children a spirit of fear, but a Spirit of love, power, and a sound mind. May he be bold like Peter in following Jesus.

May Agnes, who knows so many things, know the Author of all wisdom and knowledge. May she be like Paul and be able to teach others with joy what she knows and what the Lord will be teaching her throughout her life. May the God of peace equip Agnes with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in Agnes what is pleasing to Him.

May Janet be like Mary, who was the sweet, loving Mother of Jesus. May her love abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that she may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God. May Janet be a great blessing to her people with her gifts of service and kindness.

May the Spirit of the Lord – the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might – rest upon Ivan. Keep him from the evil one and help him to rejoice in the Lord always. May his gifts be not only useful in his own life, but in the preservation of the lives of others.

May Kristina always know that her needs are being met according to God’s riches in Christ Jesus. May she walk a righteous path, which will be like the light of dawn that shines brighter and brighter until the full day. May her diligence, perseverance, and forgiveness bless her way and bring comfort to her family.

View from the transmitter
May Donald know he has been chosen and blessed by God. May he not be tempted to do wrong, but always follow the Lord’s teachings. May Donald learn to be sensitive to others and inspire others to do their best. May Donald’s gifts and abilities be used to help others who have difficulties to trust in God’s power to be overcomers.

Show Terry that he is fearfully and wonderfully made, and that Your works are wonderful. Teach him that he is precious in Your sight, and that You love him. Bless Terry and help him to use his gift of friendliness to bring people together in harmony.

God has endowed you, Jacob, with special artistic talents. May you be surrounded with many opportunities to use those talents for good works. May the Lord accomplish great things through you, and may you touch many lives and make a difference in many people.

Until Later.

May 18

As you might have seen/heard on the news, the new President of the Navajo Nation, Russell Begaye, was inaugurated on May 12, 2015.  Nelson Betoney of Western Indian Ministries interviewed Mr. Begaye and the vice-President Jonathan Nez on our radio station KHAC a week before the inauguration. The interview flowed back and forth between fluent Navajo and English, but I can share with you are some of the quotes I heard in English. We sense a new hopefulness here.

Begaye: The Lord selects a new leader. God is always in control [of the ballots]. We’re His instruments to make a lot of these things come about.

We didn’t know if we would win because you never know how people will vote.

KHAC: What were you thinking as you were hearing the results come in?
Begaye: I was out at the Chapter Houses thanking people for the voting, so at first I wasn’t even in Window Rock listening to the results.
First I was thankful. I was thankful to the Lord for the results that had come in. I wasn’t thinking so much about being President at that time… I wanted the right words as I was going to speak to the people.

I was thinking, “God is in control.” I was thanking the people for turning out for the election. Forty-one thousand voters turned out. For me that [being elected the President] was not a concern right then. God gives you the mind of Christ and the energy and wisdom to do the job. God puts it in you. God is going to be leading out, whatever we do. I was just thanking the people.

KHAC: Have you been inspired by any Bible characters who were in government? Who is your example? Who do you relate to?
Begaye: I think Daniel is a good example. They were in enemy country and [Daniel and his friends] never abandoned their faith. They stood on the foundation of their faith. The [Babylonian] culture tried to bring them into their culture, but they were protected by the Lord. They came out as the smartest people -- standing on the Rock.
We are going to be standing on the Rock during our administration. Jesus is the Cornerstone-- the solid Rock.

Also I think about Josiah who took over the throne at such a young age. It is important to note that when these rulers took their eyes off the Lord, everything kind of collapses on them... The whole nation suffers, not just that king or leader. That is the work of God.
Those leaders had to depend on the Lord. I have to depend on God in the same way.
I have a Daily Bible verse Program into my phone. Today’s Proverb says: “The mind of man makes his plan, but the steps are directed by the Lord.” This is very fitting.

When we were elected, the news went around the world. The world heard from two people [myself and Jonathan Nez] who love the Lord who are going to lead the Navajo Nation. The New York Times and other major newspapers ran the stories.
So, I’m believing that as we keep ourselves in God’s hand, He’ll bless us beyond what you can imagine. It makes us feel humble and grateful. We really rely on prayer warriors.

KHAC: Mr. Nez, were you worried or nervous before the election?
Nez: For us, we slept well and were at peace, because we felt this was the calling of God. God is the One who bestows authority on leaders. You can see that truth in the Bible going back to the time of Samuel. We have been very open about our Christian faith.

KHAC: Some people thought you weren’t going to win at all, but you came up on top.
Nez: Yes, that is a miracle in itself.

KHAC: Share about your family.
Nez: We plan on sending our son, Christopher to Hilltop Christian School. Right now he’s homeschooled. They are always with me. He is seven years old, and he’s been all over the United States at his age. He’s seen Washington D.C., many times. One good thing about homeschooling is that we get to travel together. …We’re moving into our house now and getting situated.  Christopher is already a runner. He runs 5k already. He likes to go exercise with my wife and me.

KHAC: How did you select Mr. Nez as your running mate?

Begaye: It is privilege to have Jonathan Nez as vice-President. He is the best that the nation has ever had. He’s widely experienced as a county supervisor and a counsel delegate. He’s chaired the Budget and Finance Committee.
I asked several different groups as well as my own team who would make a good VP. They all submitted 4-5 names, and Jonathan’s name came in on every list. The Lord just brought us together. We complement each other and make a strong team. He’s young, so he brings a different perspective; but we are unified as we serve together.

Nez: We are working on several projects and continuing some initiatives that I started when I was on the counsel… All of the election was a miracle and a truly humbling experience. I am thinking of that verse in Romans 8:28: “All things work together for good for those who are called for His purpose.” I am looking onward to the next stage of my life as Russell Begaye’s vice-President.

Begaye: We have been asking who wants to help us in our administration and have gotten a lot of response. All the pastors – our pastors are the watchmen standing in the gap- really want to help especially to help build and renovate homes for our people. We are planning to partner with faith-based groups to help each other. We will be looking towards our brothers and sisters in Christ who want to help. We need the help of believers to do the things that our people need.

Begaye: People have told us, “We’re creating a Begaye-Nez prayer circle.” Thank you for your support and your prayers.

KHAC : Pray, all of you across the Navajo Nation, for our new President and vice-President and for the Navajo Nation.
